ESR 3 will research ‘Gender equalities in a City of Culture’ , investigating how major public cultural events in the city become key sites for the production of cultures of equality and act as an interface between official narratives and public perception and experience. The research will be comprised of comparative ethnographic research and spatial mapping via smart phone technologies of different gendered public experiences of Hull’s tenure as the UK City of Culture in 2017 (http://hull2017.co.uk/) and a comparable Spanish urban cultural festival. The resulting ethnographic analysis will be used to extend theoretically our understanding of the ‘eventfulness’ of urban public culture and generate practical insights about how public and private organisations might performatively engage people in the production of gender equalities when planning future events. This research is part of Work Package 2 “Urban Cultures of Gender Equality” led by Hull University and Oviedo University This ESR will be employed by and complete a PhD at The University of Hull, and will be required to undertake a secondment at the University of Oviedo.
