ESR 6 will research ‘Sport as a site for the production of cultures of equality’, investigating how sporting events and practices in the city serve as a site for the production of cultures of equality. Sport is deemed generally to be a site for the production of hegemonic masculinities and the naturalization of sexual difference. However, the focus of this ESR project will be on sporting events and programmes which, following the Council of the European Union’s Conclusion on Gender Equality in Sport (2014:3) seek to be an ‘effective tool for equal opportunities and social inclusion’. Using both documentary and qualitative research the ESR will both map the range of policies and practices initiated and use case studies to analyse in depth the way that gender equalities cultures are being produced in and through sporting practice. This research is part of Work Package 2 “Urban Cultures of Gender Equality” led by Hull University and Oviedo University This ESR will be employed by and complete a PhD at The University of Hull, and will be required to undertake a secondment at the University of Oviedo.
